“Handsome” — The Legacy Horse

Handsome’s Story
After breeding for over 40 years, Handsome is the last horse raised by Jennifer O’Neill – actress, author, CoverGirl, and founder of HHH. From the beginning, Handsome was surrounded by love, care, and advanced training.
He comes from a strong line of champion hunter-jumpers, and spent years competing with Jen in the “A” circuit as she prepared him for sale. Unfortunately, Handsome dislocated his shoulder in the field as a 4yr old, but once healed, Jen again attempted to place him where he could continue his show career. Each time, he was returned due to some challenging behavior on his part.
The final time Handsome came home after a trial sale, Jen realized that he had a deep fear of jumping due to his shoulder injury, so she told him that he would never have to jump or compete again, and that he was “home for good.” Something changed. Handsome relaxed. He settled. He seemed to understand that he had a new role as an Equine-Assisted-Therapy horse at HHH. Today, Handsome remains one of the most important horses at the farm, and everyone’s favorite star of our 4-legged teammates for healing our deepest hurts. He is compassionate, highly alert, and a bit of a scamp.

Handsome has a lot of spirit and he shows it:
Bold, expressive, intelligent and deeply aware of the people’s needs around him. Although never dangerous, he will test one while evaluating the individual’s leadership qualities . . .
Once trust is established, the bond is beyond beautiful. The moment Handsome accepts you as his compassionate, confident leader, the partnership becomes dependable and exceptionally rewarding. There will never be another horse like him at HHH: Strong and deeply loyal!

“Finn” — Our Athlete
16.3h Thoroughbred | Age: ~18 | Emotional Support Partner & Groundwork Horse
Finn’s Story
Finn’s Story Finn is a glorious Thoroughbred with the heart and conformation of a true athlete. Competing in 3 day eventing in his younger years, he performed “Cross-Country”, “Stadium Jumping” and Dressage! His future was full of momentum until a very serious accident abruptly ended his competitive career. After his injury, Finn’s owner (a former volunteer at HHH) turned him out to pasture for a period of time. We rescued this magnificent horse, bringing him to Hope & Healing at Hillenglade so he could continue living a meaningful, active life.
When Finn first arrived at the farm, the transition was difficult. He was highly traumatized although conditioned for speed and performance – carrying far more “go” than “whoa.” Over the course of many months, with consistent training by Jen and patient handling, Finn learned to regulate his energy, calm his fears, slow his pace, and adapt to his new role. Today, he is still athletic, sound and powerful – but he has also learned how to be present, grounded, and emotionally available. He’s an effusive, affectionate and super sensitive boy!
Personality & Strengths
Finn is kind, sensitive, and deeply perceptive. Crowded or noisy settings can still make him nervous, which is why definitive yet calm leadership is essential when working with Finn. With proper guidance he becomes focused, steady and remarkably responsive (which are great “lessons learned” by his human partners as well).
During sessions, Finn mirrors the emotional needs of our participants in ways that are difficult to describe unless witnessed firsthand. After emotionally heavy sessions, he will often step away on his own to decompress: A quiet release for himself after carrying the emotional needs of those he serves.
Outside of structured work, Finn seeks gentle connection. If you’re standing near the gate, he will often approach, rest his head against you, or lean in for quiet comfort. He is especially well-suited for participants who long for calm physical connection: Petting, hugging, and simply being present with this magnificent, unique horse is a gift.

“Henni” — The Gentle Solid Newcomer

Henni’s Story
Henni is the newest member of the HHH team. Before coming to the farm, Henni showed in both dressage and carriage driving, giving him a strong foundation in training and responsiveness. Now, he is transitioning into his new role focused on connection and groundwork-based interaction.
With his thick tri-collored mane, compact build, and fluffy appearance, Henni often looks more like a cartoon character than a traditional horse: Everyone immediately falls in love with him. He is a rare breed of a “war horse” from ancient Norway, and is fast becoming a favorite at HHH!
He lives with “donkeyettes” Lucy and Ethel who are totally enamored with this handsome guy!
Personality & Strengths
Henni is friendly, curious, and highly people oriented. When working with him, one can feel that he wants guidance, looking to his partner for leadership, direction and affection.
He is light in resposne, and quick to follow cues, making him especially enjoyable for participants who are new at working with equines. “Fanciful” describes this unique boy!

Lucy & Ethel’s Story
Lucy and Ethel have been part of HHH since they were babies, and have grown up alongside the program itself. Over the years, they’ve become familiar faces on the farm. Affectionately known as “The Donkeyettes,” they bring a gentle, lighthearted presence to the property and often become instant favorites for visitors.
Personality & Strengths
Lucy and Ethel are sweet and curious, yet slightly cautious by nature. Once they trust you, they will wander over and stand nearby, especially when someone is sitting quietly in their “space”: Next thing you know, they’re looking for hugs and cookies.
Lucy & Ethel’s Role at HHH
Lucy and Ethel play a unique and meaningful role in a special ceremonial activity at HHH. They are part of a ceremony where participants paint symbols on the “donkeyettes’” fur that represent the individuals personal challenges, burdens, or emotional struggles. Participants then wash the donkeys clean – releasing whatever symbols of struggle they painted: Rooted in Native American tradition, these moments are powerful and life changing!

“Jasper” — The Mischievous Sidekick
Miniature Donkey | Age: ~7 | Companion Animal & Morale Booster
Jasper’s Story
Jasper arrived at HHH alongside Austin (a European Warmblood horse) from the same owner. Before Jasper came into Austin’s life, Austin had another longtime companion who passed away. After that loss, Austin became withdrawn and noticeably depressed. Jasper was brought in as a companion to help bring life back into Austin – and he did exactly that! Their connection is a daily reminder of how powerful companionship can be not just for people, but for animals too. In addition, Jasper is such a delightful “clown”!
Personality & Strengths
Jasper is full of energy, personality and attitude: He thinks he’s much bigger than he actually is, and has no problem showing it. You’ll often see him jumping, spinning, kicking up his heels, and playfully nipping at the larger horses. When he’s turned loose in the arena, his ears go back, his head drops, and he’s off bucking, turning and rolling with pure exuberance for life! Jasper loves to tease Austin; stealing his food, nudging him while he’s working, or giving a quick playful nip before sprinting away. He also is a sight to see when Lucy and Ethel (the “donkeyettes”) join him in the big ring. Behind the spunk and mischief is a soft heart. When participants aren’t looking, Jasper will often wander over looking for attention, then grabbing Austin’s rope as he leads his formidable friend around the ring!

Jasper plays an important role in the emotional and fun-loving environment of the farm by:

“Austin” — The Steady Warrior

Austin’s Story
Austin is a former champion show horse bred in Europe who spent many years competing in the “A Circuit” before being shipped to the United States. After a long and accomplished career, his owner made the decision to retire him from the show ring and give him the opportunity to live a slower chapter of his life. . . He’s definitely not ready to be “put out for pasture”. Austin has been with HHH for about four months and is currently in training, gained over 100 pounds, and has learned to smile. Even in this short time here on the farm, he has already participated in several successful walking and groundwork sessions, showing steady progress and strong engagement with participants. Austin does face ongoing health challenges, including ulcers, scratches and tumors (being a gray horse). With proper nutrition, veterinary care, and daily attention, these conditions are being actively managed so he can remain comfortable and continue contributing in a meaningful way. He is sound and happy in his new, relaxed job.
Personality & Strengths
Austin is stoic, confident and deeply composed. He is not overly expressive, but once he decides to trust you, he offers something powerful: Calm presence and quiet partnership. When Austin “hooks on,” he stays focused while maintaining his natural dignity, which creates a grounding presence during sessions.

JB’s Story
JB is a papered Palamino Cutting Quarter Horse Mare. Before being rescued by HHH, she spent ALL of her life as a brood mare (well into her later years). Because of that background, we are especially mindful of her physical comfort and workload. She has been at HHH for 7 years. At 28, JB has transitioned into a kind, loving girl – one focused on teaching, reliability and athletic performance. She is still a “show-stopper” in the looks department, and is highly sensitive, She’s the only mare at the farm, and loves it!
Personality & Strengths
JB is dependable, observant, and very aware of what’s going on around her. She knows the program routines and understands what’s expected of her during sessions. She also seems to know when a participant is pregnant, instinctively and affectionately resting her head on the participant’s “baby bump”. . . Moms will be moms. JB moves at her own pace. She is a slow, steady walker who rewards patience, calm yet definite leadership, and consistency. At the same time, she is stunning to watch move through her trot and canter gaits at liberty during the session. . . She truly is a glorious elder lady!

“Whiskey” — Our Free-Spirited Teenager

Whiskey’s Story
Whiskey is a Rocky Mountain Spotted Walking Horse with a personality that’s hard to miss. Around the farm, we often call him “our teenager”: Not only because he’s our youngest horse, but because he likes to do things on his own terms. Whiskey was donated to Hope & Healing at Hillenglade after suffering a tendon injury in his hind left leg. He also has Cushing’s disease which 14 we are managing. While he can no longer move safely beyond a walk or perform high-impact work, he is perfect and comfortable to lead, groom and engage in low-intensity exchanges. His unique and endearing personality has never dimmed, and Mr. Whiskey remains one of the favorite HHH 4-legged team members: He absolutely loves the attention he gets by all!
Personality & Strengths
Whiskey is playful and highly charismatic. Some days he’s ready to work. Other days, he has his own agenda. `Despite this independent streak, Whiskey has a calm and inviting presence that people naturally gravitate toward. When he first arrived, he was afraid of one of the round pen entrances: We believe he may have had a negative experience with large doorways in the past. Over time, with patient guidance, Whiskey slowly learned to face his fears. While he still occasionally checks to make sure the “boogeyman” isn’t hiding nearby, he is far more relaxed and willing to approach new spaces while he shares with his human partner affection and confidence. 15 Veterans and First Responders: People who are often tough, guarded, and reserved, consistently connect with Whiskey. There is something about his bravery that feels familiar and approachable.
